CHOOSING
A HARDWOOD FLOOR
|
| Wood flooring adds beauty and
value to your home. You are making a very
important decision when choosing to install
hardwood floors in your home, but before you
make that decision, let us help you choose
the right flooring and materials that will
do the job right and help you enjoy your new
wood flooring. |
|
|
| Some people may not know the
difference between solid oak and engineered
wood floors or prefinished floors. The difference
between solid wood and engineered wood is
that solid wood is ¾" solid versus
engineered wood, which is layers of playwood
and a thin top of oak or other kinds of wood.
The solid oak can be sanded up to six or
seven times and the engineered wood floor
can be sanded only once, probably twice
at the most.
Here at J.R. Floors we only work with solid
wood flooring because we consider it the
best alternative and we want to make our
costumers happy by offering them the best
wood flooring in their homes.
Many companies work on solid wood floors,
using their own methods, but there is only
one way to do it right, and that is the
way that we do it at J.R. Floors. Before
we install the wood floor, we prepare the
concrete slab. If there is a need to level
the concrete, we use a level float and then
we check the moisture making sure it is
ready for the floor installation.

HOW
ITS DONE
Nail down floor:
- Use 800 Everlock,
- 1X4 or 2X4 screeds,
- 15 Lbs. Felt paper in top of the screeds;
- Nail the floor in top of the paper
on screeds, for that we use 1-1/2"
or 1-3/4" powercleat nails, we use
manual nailers because they don't let
the wood to tight and they helps a lot
to the floor can stay longer time.
- We leave ½" space around
the walls to let the floor expand.
This is the way to do the nail down floor.
And we been doing it this way for long time,
and this is the only way we minimize errors.
Glue Down:
Mastic, or adhesive is spread on with a
notched trowel on to the subfloor to adhere
the wood flooring to the subfloor.

SANDING
& FINISHING
Sanding and fiishing it is also only one
way to do the job right, and we choose to
do it right to satisfy our consumers.
It is a good process:
- We use hummel machine belt to sander.
We run the machine under crossing grain
with 36 grain paper to help put the floor
back on level and we run the machine and
follow the grain with the same 36 grit
paper. Sometimes the floor doesn't need
36 grit paper, sometimes we use 50 and
80 grit paper.
- We use 80 and 100 grit screen, and we
buffer the floor with that as much as
possible to make the floor smooth.
- We use vacuum cleaner and dust mop to
pick up most of the dust.
- Staining with the color of your choice.
- We buffer and put two coats of finish.
This is the best way to sand and finish
a wood floor. Because of our methods, we
have lot of satisfied customers.
DIFFERENT QUALITIES
OF SOLID WOOD
- Clear. It is free of defects
although it may have minor imperfections.
- Select & Better: It has more
clean looking grain, is almost clear,
but contains more natural characteristics
such as knots and color variations.
- Common- Grades (No. 1 and No. 2):
This wood has more markings because of
the natural features and the character
they bring to a room. It has a variegated
appearance, light and dark colors, knots,
worm holes; is rustic in appearance and
allow all wood characteristics of the
species.
